Im not your friend pal family guy11/25/2023 Racism, sexism, and homophobia are not simply misguided views like any other views that we can hope to change through reasoned debate (although we can try to do that). Is it okay? Well, the view that I have arrived at today is that openly supporting a political party that-in the name of austerity-withdraws support from the poor, the sick, the foreign, and the unemployed while rewarding those in society who are least in need of reward, that sells off our profitable public goods to private companies while keeping the loss-making ones in the public domain, that boasts about cleaning up the economy while creating more new debt than every Labour government combined, that wants to scrap the Human Rights Act and (via the TTIP) hand sovereignty over some of our most important public institutions to big business-to express one’s support for a political party that does these things is as objectionable as expressing racist, sexist, or homophobic views. We hand-wringing, bleeding-heart lefties need to change tack. (I’m generalising: political views exist on a spectrum, and some moderate conservatives are open to debate.) So, the hope-expressed by some liberals-that political change can happen by keeping debate open is somewhat optimistic, and perhaps even deluded. Far from viewing it as desirable to subject their political beliefs to reasoned evaluation and criticism, many conservatives view reason as a corrupting influence. Conservatives, traditionally, base much of their politics on gut feelings or intuitions-what Edmund Burke in the 18 th century called ‘prejudice’, and what Leon Kass has more recently termed the ‘wisdom of repugnance’. Then there is the fact that ‘engaging in political debate’ and ‘revising one’s political views in the light of rational argument’ are themselves hallmarks of liberal thinking, but not of conservative thinking. My Facebook feed today is full of posts and debates by compassionate, liberal people. Sure, social media can be a powerful and unregulated force for good, and we can all share our views through Facebook and Twitter-but, given that people tend to follow those who roughly share their views, we’re preaching to the converted. The British unwillingness to discuss politics was illustrated today by the sway of the ‘shy Tories’: the people who voted Conservative, but who kept quiet about it in the run-up to the election, and certainly didn’t tell the opinion polls.Īnother reason is that the voice of the Murdoch-owned, pro-Tory press is much louder than the voice of reason. We’re much more comfortable talking about the weather, who might win the X Factor, or Kim Kardashian’s arse. It would, in some circles, be rude to raise the topic of politics over dinner, and to try to change someone’s mind about their political views-well, that’s frankly out of order. One is that, in much of British culture, people are uncomfortable with debate about politics. But-depressingly-I’m far more sceptical than I was yesterday about how much of a difference we can make with political debate. I’m attracted by the view that there is such a thing as progress in politics. I am attracted by the view that we should all keep the debate open, discuss our political views, take other people’s views into account, and revise and improve our own as we all benefit from this dialogue. Sometimes, late at night, when my brain is too tired to do anything fancy and I spot an offensive tweet by a UKIP supporter, the urge to murder them in 140 characters is too difficult to resist.) Did I do the wrong thing? Should I have kept my Conservative friends? (Admittedly, I don’t always engage constructively with them. Usually, I try to remain engaged with such people in the hope that I might be able to change their views through debate. (Thankfully, none of my friends ‘like’ the UKIP page.) Life is too short, I thought, to hang out with people who hold abhorrent political views, even if it’s just online. One of the first things I did after seeing the depressing election news this morning was check to see which of my Facebook friends ‘like’ the pages of the Conservatives or David Cameron, and unfriend them.

Relax inn motel phone number11/24/2023 I didn't dare turn on the air, because I was afraid it'd just stir it up more.think mothballs and wet socks to the point that it's all you can taste. I was genuinely tempted to sleep with the door open, but there were weird people wandering around outside. Thank goodness I had brought air freshener, but that only covered the smell for 15 minutes or so at a time. I only brought in my sleeping bag, a sheet, a hat, and a sweater for fear of contamination and am so glad that I did. Big screen on the wall, but no fridge or microwave so I didn't get to eat, nor did I want to after 2 minutes inside. The room was tiled and the floor looked clean. The AC was not on so the stench was palpable on entrance. I once had a better night's sleep, and less stink, sitting up in a Port o Potty (no joke). I have slept in some rough places over the years, between the military and working in the field. I should have checked the room first before I took it though. Room key didn't work the first time, but I quickly got one that did. The people running it were very nice and helpful, but according to online price listings, I think I was taken advantage of. On the phone, I was quoted $75 (or so I thought). Busy festival weekend at Silver Spring (knap-in). Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort.

Raspberry pi samba share permission denied11/24/2023 Take a look at the documentation for more information on all the configuration options available in smb.conf. The Samba configuration file uses the same format as Windows. Press CTRL+O to save the file, and CTRL+X to exit nano. Scroll to the end of the file and add the configuration code from the nf listing. The smb.conf file is packed with detailed information on the Samba configuration (it’s a good idea to read through it all). Now let’s edit the Samba configuration file. sudo cp /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf_backup First, let’s make a backup just in case you want to look at the original. Now we need to edit Samba’s configuration file to make the shared directory visible to other computers on the network. Files you drop in here are accessible on other computers, and files you drop into the directory from other computers will appear on your Pi. You’ll be able to access this directory from other computers on your network. You can put it anywhere, but ours is in the home directory (it makes it easier to access without adjusting permissions). Now we’re going to create a dedicated shared directory in our home directory. Open a Terminal and type: sudo apt updateĪnswer Y when prompted. We’re going to update our repository index, make sure our operating system is fully updated, and install Samba using APT. Samba is available in Raspbian’s standard software repositories. Attach the power cable to boot up the Raspberry Pi. We suggest you connect an Ethernet cable between your Raspberry Pi and modem/router (otherwise use the wireless LAN icon to connect to a wireless network when booted up). Insert the microSD card into your Raspberry Pi and connect the keyboard, mouse, and HDMI cable. See our Quickstart Guide if you’re unsure on how to set up a Raspberry Pi for the first time. Install Raspbianĭownload the latest version of NOOBS (or the latest Raspbian Stretch with Desktop image file) and install it to a microSD card. The project will still work if you connect your Raspberry Pi via WiFi, although performance will be affected, particularly when it comes to copying over large files. We recommend using a wired Ethernet connection for stability and fast transfer speeds. Once set up, you can mount your home file server on all the other computers on your network, and use it as a convenient place to store everything from music files you want to share with your housemates, to backups of important documents and save-game files you’d like to share between computers. We suggest checking non-working SD cards online before you buy, to make sure you get one that’s fully compatible with the Raspberry Pi. However, if you need extra storage, it’s possible to mount a large external USB drive and create a Samba entry for it.Īlternatively, if you want to keep things compact, you can install Raspbian on microSD cards of up to 256GB, although we think it’s wiser to install Samba on an external drive and use a smaller microSD to boot Raspbian and connect to it. We also assume you’re using a 32GB (or smaller) microSD card, which provides a reasonable amount of storage space without requiring any extra steps to make it accessible. This tutorial assumes that you’ll use a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to set up your file server alternatively, you can enable SSH and connect to it remotely from another computer on your local network. With Samba activated, you can quickly copy files from a computer on your network to a Raspberry using wireless LAN (or a direct Ethernet connection). This article first appeared in The MagPi 80 and was written by Lucy Hattersley Samba is the Linux implementation of the SMB/CIFS file-sharing standard used by Windows PCs and Apple computers, and widely supported by media streamers, games consoles, and mobile apps. It’s easy to use a Raspberry Pi as a Samba file server where you can store backups and share files from all the other computers on your network.

Wireless numeric keypad11/24/2023 Some also feature backlit keys, which is a huge plus for some. Some numeric keypads include an LED light to alert you when the keypad is powered up and ready to use or when the battery is low. Much like standard keyboards, numeric keypads are often black, although some have a few other options, such as a brushed aluminum appearance. While numeric keypads are not massive in size, some are slimmer and more stylish than others. The longer the cord, the more versatile the numeric keypad will be. Some cords for wired numeric pads can be quite short, in the 2-foot to 3-foot range. While not a feature of wireless numeric keypads, the cord will be a consideration for wired ones. The keys should be large enough to comfortably use, and they are usually concave for finger comfort. The number of keys on a numeric keypad typically ranges from 18 to 22, with 18 being the baseline. These offer a firmer feel and a louder click that some people prefer. While rare, some numeric keypads employ mechanical switches. Those who seek to use the keypad via Bluetooth will need to pair the keypad with their computer’s Bluetooth receiver for it to work. They are typically plug-and-play items, requiring no driver installation to use. Numeric keypads should require little in the way of setup. Keypads with too little weight can move around easily when you are trying to use them. A super lightweight numeric keypad may be a better option for those who travel frequently with their computer, but be careful about going too light. Numeric keypads are generally quite lightweight, but that does vary a bit. That said, some wired keypads also require batteries to operate. Wired numeric keypads have an advantage in that they are often powered solely through the USB cable, so you are never left scrambling for batteries. This is often in the form of disposable batteries, although some keypads feature rechargeable battery packs. PowerĪll wireless numeric keypads require some form of battery to operate. One downside of wireless keypads is that they require batteries, either disposable or rechargeable, to work. Wired cord lengths can be short, sometimes just 2 or 3 feet, while wireless distances can reach 30 feet or more. With a wireless keypad, you are not limited by cord length, which makes the unit more versatile. While this is often a matter of preference, wireless can provide benefits that a wired keypad does not, and vice versa. Others have built-in Bluetooth or other wireless capabilities. Some numeric keypads plug directly into a computer using a cord. Find out which systems and versions a numeric keypad is compatible with before getting it. Your numeric keypad will be much more versatile if it has the ability to work with the widest variety of operating systems. In addition, some numeric keypads only work with specific versions of operating systems (usually newer ones). Some numeric keypads work with a variety of operating systems while others are specific to one system, like PC/Windows. Follow Frandroid on Google News (and Numerama).Choosing a wireless numeric keypad (as opposed to a corded keypad) can help cut down on cord clutter. Unclutter your desk11/24/2023 So the more clutter kept on your desk, the harder it is to process information and switch between tasks successfully. The more stuff you have around your immediate work environment, the more each item competes for “neural representation”–i.e, your attention.Ī disorganized desk makes it harder to focus, according to research. The mess on your work desk inhibits your overall productivity because everything is competing for your limited mental resources. If you spend a greater percentage of your time at work, it’s worth giving that space some attention to do your best work.įollow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! To get a clear view of what needs to be done, take pictures from your phone and zoom in on specific areas that need to be targeted. It is possible to lose objectivity when you have to arrange your own desk. The idea here is to make you work effectively but if your work begins to suffer because of this then the purpose of having a clean desk is lost. The reason for this is that once you become addicted to keeping your desk clean, that is all that you will do. On the other hand, the more you try to keep your office in order, the more likely it is that you will fail at your mission. The relief from not having loose cables around your desk is a powerful tool in your mission to unclutter things. Get rid of the wires by bunching them all together and keeping them in a corner where your hand and feet are unlikely to wander. From mobile chargers to laptop wires, our dependence on technology has made cables ubiquitous to offices. Arrange cables in a rowĬables are the bane of the modern office. The less you stretch across the desk for things you want, the lower the chances of you sifting through a whole lot of things to get to it. The trick here is to make use of the limited amount of space given to you in such a way that the things you use the most are closest to you. Fruits compete with papers that fight with water bottles on our ever-shrinking desk. In a bid to have everything at our disposal, we tend to keep almost all our things on the desk. Imagine your happiness when you reach work on Monday and come to a clean desk. But if you decide to dedicate one golden hour at the end of each week to go through what your desk needs and what items can be disposed off of, you will have mastered an important aspect of keeping your desk clean. Be it memos, HR circulations or your weekly magazines, there is simply too much stuff coming in. It is a given that you will not have time through the week to sort everything that comes to you. Here are a few ways you can unclutter your desk in an effort to be at your optimum best. Managers who keep their desk clean can expect ideas to flow quickly and feeling a sense of well-being in their workspace. There is a direct correlation between your level of productivity and how clean your desk is.

Soybean paste used in ramen shop11/24/2023 It turns out that Chinese and Asian groceries are key, because these ingredients are Asian cuisine staples, especially in soups. You might not have a good idea about where to go to get these things. Most people aren't too familiar with going out and buying chicken feet or pork femurs. So now you've figured out that, when we're thinking about making ramen, we're dealing with pretty large quantities of animal products that are not typically used in American kitchens. For example, shoyu and miso are both salty, but both are also sources of umami, and each brings its own unique flavor profile to the ramen. It can be a vehicle for additional umami, sweetness, sourness, or spiciness. But tare can do a lot more than just deliver salt. The most basic function of tare is to bring saltiness to the ramen. But the point remains that if you’ve eaten much ramen, you’re already familiar with tare, even if you didn’t appreciate the details until now. And when you hear t onkotsu shoyu, the reference is to both. When you see tonkotsu ramen, for example, the reference is to the soup, not the tare. This is not to say that ramen is always named according to its tare. We’ve all seen shio (salt), shoyu (soy), and miso ramens. When you go to a ramen ya (that’s the Japanese term for ramen restaurant), you’ll often see ramen categorized by the type of tare used in a particular bowl. Now that we know all about soup, let’s take a quick march through the rest of ramen’s core elements. |
